Alright, the Fall edition of the FlightGear Festival is this weekend taking place in Italy and I stepped in to organize the OPRF event which will run during the 48hrs.
Festival info: http://thejabberwocky.net/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=928 and https://forum.flightgear.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=31244 .

The plan is based on the original Base capture event format (like March 2016, when I joined OPRF) but tries to be more challenging, strategic and with more more things to take care about.
This event is divided in many small parts, the stages, which will last 3hrs with pauses of 1/2hrs in between (more details below). Remember this will happen on public servers so please avoid shooting at civilian planes.

First of all there are two teams which are given two home bases at a reasonable distance between each other, they're safe points which can't be conquered and planes cannot be shot at if on the ground.
A defined number of available bases is given to conquer by the teams (16, see map below). Each time a base is conquered (the conquerer must land and take a screenshot to be posted on the Discord server) it awards a certain amount of points agreed beforehand (20 is default, then depending on the distance (so closer to the opponents base) it increases up to 30).
If an already-conquered base is seized by the opposite team, you loose part of these points (if you get 20 by getting it, you loose 16.
Shooting down and being downed awards/takes away 4 points (so each kill has to be reported).
On each stage there will be a different bonus base which will grant extra points but if lost you loose all the extra points, while the conquering team will take twice the base points. Same happens if the bonus base is retaken again.

It's allowed to take out 1 airfield per team per stage only by bombing it, if really necessary.

Landing a large plane to an already conquered base will give you again the points given by that base, those will not be lost if the base is conquered by the opposite team.
At the end of each stage, the team with more points wins, the team winning most stages wins the whole event; at the restart of each stage, all points and conquered bases reset and new home bases and the bonus base are defined by the team leaders.

Bases are:
LIPA, LIPS, LIPL, LIMN, LIPC, LIRP, LIRS, LIBA, LIRM, LIBV, LIBR, LICZ, LICT, LICA, LIBP, LIRE.

I volunteered as TL already and so far Fb237 volunteered too so we should be covered for that.

Apart from the rules issues, I think that overall this event was a success, being widespread over the weekend with reasonably decent stage timings and duration, it gave an opportunity to attend to many pilots and required lots of skills and quick decision-making. This has been one of the most tight events we've ever had, where nothing was decided until stages were over, especially the final two.

I'd like to know if you have some critical feedback for it, especially because I think that if improved (dubious rules in particular), this event format can be used also for future events and SNFs (e.g. 3 stages of 2hrs each).

Although I didn't get as much time as I'd like it was a great event and well planned. Thanks.

  1. The rules should be made clear[1] and be in a list at the top of the event. Refer to earlier events when designing the rules for guidance
  2. The rules (here) should be up to date and definitive. If a change is agreed on mid-game between the captains then the rules need to be updated.
  3. The original message should be updated as the event progresses with pertinent information. I lost time reading back through event updates on discord trying to understand all that had happened.
  4. The length of each slot was about right; I think more than 6 hours is too long. I liked the many segment idea - but need to have these better spread out with more, longer breaks.
  5. Event details should also be in the text; there was one base on the map that I couldn't read.

----------------
[1] For example, when I was on the ground at LICA and you took it I should have taken off and got the base back; instead I quit because that was the rules from an earlier event.

Thanks Richard, much appreciated. In fact my plan was to ask feedback in order to create a separate, more precise and generic rule list for this kind of event, in order to have 'em set if and when we will be doing this again.
Will take this in account for the write up and the future ones.
